Some interesting replies...
Let's take a closer look at Canadian gun laws... Guns don't have to be locked up if you're at home with them. The shottie and the revolver in the original post are mine, and the pics were taken on my floor at home. No rules are broken. If they were loaded, that's another issue, as you can only have them loaded up where you can legally shoot.
I had a sh-load of ammo just a few feet away, so theoretically it would've only taken me a couple of seconds to rack a shell into the chamber if someone had kicked my door in at the time...
If someone had charged at me with a knife, and I pulled the trigger, I would hope I wouldn't face any charges, as I used whatever was available at the time to successfully defend my life...
I hope I would never have to test out our legal system with this scenario, but I'm curious as to what the 'real-world' outcome would be...
Let's keep in mind that some home invaders will not hesitate to kill, even if you are just an innocent bystander, as has been proven once again recently in Surrey...

One of my more recent acquisitions... A nice little piece in .45 Auto... I would've loved a 1911, but the price was a bit out of hand at the time, as I'm on a budget! Thinking back, 9mm would've been much more cost effective at the range... Oh well, .45 leaves a bigger hole :-) This particular Ruger is a fairly fine piece, as this version is stainless/aluminum, which will fire in both single/double action, and as was ordered with my pistol, no safety... It's equipped with a decocker only... I've pumped a few hundred rounds through it, and it hasn't jammed once yet...
