In a tale reminiscent of Winnie-the-Pooh, a young bear on an island near Thunder Bay, Ont., has a large plastic jar stuck to its head, making it impossible for the animal to eat or drink.

Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources said Wednesday it has been trying to catch the bear since Tuesday night.

Rob Paterson snapped a photo of the animal as it wandered onto the deck of his summer home on Lambert Island. Paterson said he has tried to isolate the bear without success.

He said local residents felt sorry for the bear and their first reaction was to help the animal. They then realized it would not be a good idea to approach a bear.

"We've made every attempt so far to try to corral him or trap him or dart him, but he's very elusive," Paterson said in a telephone interview.

The bear is in this predicament because someone didn't do a proper job of recycling the jar in the first place, he added.

"Animals get into trouble when we don't do things the way we should do them," he said. "Sadly, we've put this animal in harm's way with not discarding recyclable materials properly."

I see there was a bear attack in Northern BC...A black bear roughed up a guy pretty bad who was sleeping in a tent...hope he didn't have a bag of Cheezies in there with him.

His buddy who was in another tent managed to repel the bear and surely saved his friend from an agonizing death.

Bears will kill you, then eat your liver while you're still twitching. I have tree planter friends who witnessed that while they were up a tree...the bear pulled the lowest of three people out of a tree....and went straight for the guts, while the other two sat horrified above. Dn't fck with bears...and I've seen lots, they have never seemed cute.

There must have been a reason why it attacked that fellow ... either Cheezies or some other attraction.

I lived in Northern Alberta for a number of years and had sightings/interactions with black bears on an almost weekly basis.  They're dangerous, but in my experience are happy to stay away from people unless they pose some sort of threat.  One young boy whose family I knew was dragged by a bear into its den and mauled to death, but he was dangling his legs into the den when he knew there was a hibernating bear in it.

Huesos, did your tree planting friends say anything more about the circumstances?  For instance, did the bear have cubs or did they startle it in some way?

Poor bear. I hope they find him soon.  Sad
Starving to death must be a horrible way to die.
