First, i would like to state that I am NOT in grade 4. My daughter is. Smiley  This is her first Science Fair Project, and we are completely stumped. I don't recall having to do a science project ever in my life, so i can't even offer any personal suggestions or advice.  So, i am wondering if any one here has lived thru this experience and if so, can you offer any suggestions?  I am not very scientifically inclined, so something easy, yet interesting is what i was hoping for! Thanks in advance!!!

She can do the effects of various drinks/ liquids on teeth. That's a pretty common one that's easy to test on eggshells.

Hmmm... well maybe if you tell us what topics are covered in her current textbook we can give you more ideas that are related to her classroom material.

I remember my son had to make something to drop an egg out of a second floor window and have the egg stay intact. The kids came up with all sorts of cool ideas, with balloons and wrappings etc. I can't remember how my son did his but I know his was one of the ones that did not break.
One of the more fun experiments they did.

Maybe you should watch this TV show on PBS to get some ideas.

Introducing Make: television
Presenting a new national series from MAKE magazine, Twin Cities Public Television, and American Public Television.

Make: is the DIY series for a new generation! It celebrates "Makers" - the inventors, artists, geeks and just plain everyday folks who mix new and old technology to create new-fangled marvels.

Thanks guys for the ideas and advice! i did check internet ideas first, but i thought most of the ideas looked like somethign that would be part of their actual class, as opposed to a science fair? So i thought i would check if anyone here had any tried tested and true ideas! i like the egg/tooth idea!

Whatever you decide to do, be very careful that your sience project doesn't become something more of a Social Studies report.  eg:  A writeup about native indians, or vikings, early settlers, etc.  Many people make this mistake.  It's all about science.  On the other hand, you can do a project on something like the structure of native indian buildings such as long houses or igloos.

There are many things you can do.  It's mostly technology that fascinates the spectators and judges if there are any.  Technologies such as how things work or how they benifit us, etc...

I once did a project on bi-metals and thermalcouples in fourth grade and got second place for it.  Do lots of research!  I didn't have Google or the internet in my days.  Just the encyclopedia sets in the libraries and good old fashion card catalogues to sift through.

Some good sites to look things up are:
How Stuff Works

Ask Jeeves

WikiPedia
and if all else fails:
Google

Damn teachers! Can't they do these things in school hours! My daughter is in grade 2, comes home with so much homework assignments, like as if she can do it on her own!  Angry This forces already busy parents with their own bloody jobs to sit with a complaining kid doing homework. Pisses me off! I don't think homework should be sent home till the kids are able to try to do most of the work on their own.

Good luck and have fun Pinkie. lol  Wink Grin

Doing a teachers job is not called parenting. I don't have great teaching skills and kids usually give their parents a hard time as appose to a stranger or teacher. I don't remember getting homework in elementary school. High school for sure but by then I can do it myself and ask for help if I was really stuck. My mom had horrible teaching skill also. My sisters and I still have back of the head slap marks. lol  Grin

I remember my son getting a project in about grade 6.He was supposed to build a building from Barkersville,or someplace like that. He made his out of popcycle sticks glued to cut out card boards shapes, sort of like building a ginger bread house but with siding. He put in tooth picks for the widows etc.
Anyway when it came time to look at them all you could tell a good chunk of them were made by the dads. They were made from wood sawed out and nailed together, real professional looking little buildings. LOL

Part of getting all that homework is no doubt because the school year keeps getting cut shorter and shorter.

A two-week spring break?

I can remember getting homework around grade three or four and I did it all on my own--except for spelling tests which I liked to be quizzed on.
