I've actually wondered about this myself. Why is not shaving legs or armpits like the most disgusting thing a women can do, when we almost all have hair there? I mean it's natural, so why it is so repulsive? 
Note: I'd never be caught in public with hairy legs, I'm just pointing out something I've thought was odd.

I imagine it's mostly a social construct, although it's possible that there is some sort of evolutionary thing at work--maybe less hair would suggest younger or more feminine?

In Western countries, many women shave their legs for aesthetic reasons. This practice has developed especially since the early twentieth century, as hemlines on women's dresses have become shorter and women's swimsuits have become briefer, revealing more or all of a woman's legs.

Special razors, somewhat different in shape from those used by men for face-shaving, are often marketed to women. Advertising campaigns also promote hair-removal products, such as depilatories and waxing kits, which, when used on women's legs, allegedly will render them "sexy" or "silky smooth".

A little bit of hair on guys legs and arms is fine. But no one wants to be kissing a super hairy chest when you're about to get freaky. Guys should keep everything trimmed if not shaved completely. Besides that I find most men that are really hairy are only hairy because they have nothing to show off so nothing to clean up for.

when you think about it, itsy does have it correct. just like her and most of you, i find a hairy female very unappealing. is this just simply social construct/social engineering? it probably is because i think there are many countries that never saw it as a concern until usa/fashion influence brought it to their attention.--below, a 1982 article from the Journal of American Culture by Christine Hope bearing the grand title "Caucasian Female Body Hair and American Culture."

isn't the same thing true with white teeth? this was not a big issue when i was a kid. it just shows each of us how we all are heavily influenced by others even if we truly believe we think for ourselves. social engineering most certainly exists and we are all affected by it in varying degrees.
